Australian Mining Companies Profile

Australia is full of mining / resources companies, and is generally considered as one of the world’s top 4 mining countries. A large number of mid-sized Australian resources companies have been merged since 2000/2001, but in the recent years, a number of junior companies have established themselves in becoming sizable producers. We will start publishing profile of interesting & emerging Australian Mining companies.

Atlas Iron (Iron Ore)

AGO is an exploration company with four projects in varying stages of exploration at Farrel Well, Pardoo, Abydos, Mt Gould and Weld Range, in Western Australia.

These projects are believed to be highly prospective for iron ore and base metal mineralisation. AGO focuses primarily on discovering and developing iron ore projects. AGO’s Pardoo and Abydos projects in the Pilbara region have significant deposits of Direct Shipping Ore (DSO). It is one of the fastest emerging mid-tier iron ore companies in Australia and has made substantial progress from its operations, the company is also actively seeking acquisition opportunities in the iron ore sectors.

Bougainville Copper (Copper, Gold & Silver PNG Areas)

Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) is an investment company. The Company has produced copper concentrate containing gold and silver from a mine at Panguna, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, from 1972 until operations were suspended due to militant activity in May 1989. BCL is one of the very early Australian starters that had recognized the potential mining opportunities in PNG, the company’s shareholders include Rio Tinto and the PNG Government.

Global Mining Investments Limited (Mining Investments)

Global Mining Investments Limited is an Australia-based company. The Company invests in the metal and mining sectors of global equity markets. The Company’s objective in managing capital is to provide shareholders with capital growth over the medium-to long term, balanced with the distribution of income received by the Company, through the payment of fully franked dividends to its shareholders.

The commodity spread at June 30, 2009, was 21% in gold, 12% in platinum, 11% in copper, 5% in coal, 4% in nickel and the balance spread across diversified producers, but this is changing on ongoing basis.

The company is one of a handful (but increasing) listing mining investment companies based out of Australia. GMI invests both Australian and offshore opportunities, the company is also looking at opportunities in the oil & gas sectors as well. To our knowledge, they mainly invest in listed companies, we are checking if they also invest in Pre-IPO or early stage unlisted companies.
